Pearls are formed inside the shells of living molluscs; most commonly oysters, mussels and clams. They are not strictly gemstones but rather layers of iridescent nacre’, carefully produced by the animal to encase an irritant that has entered the shell and prevent it from harming the delicate interior tissue. No two pearls will ever be the same because each species of oyster has its own unique colour of nacre and a wondrous natural array of shapes and sizes can be discovered within each shell.
Pearls are the birthstone of June and widely regarded as the ultimate symbol of wisdom. They also represent serenity and can strengthen meaningful relationships. According to Japanese legends, pearls are the tears of mermaids and water nymphs; unsurpassed treasures of the sea!
(All of our beautiful pearls are grown in freshwater and each living creature is lovingly tended to by the wonderful pearl farmers we partner with, ensuring they live long and happy lives!)
